Many years ago, a wild kitten took up residence at our facility. Our production crew would eat lunch outside and the cat would hang out near their eating area and some of the crew would throw her bits of food and after they’d left, she would go through the trash can eating what she could.
It wasn’t long before she’d given birth to her first litter. After that she had enough litters to produce 43 offspring. I know that because each time she had a litter we’d follow her and find it. We’d check them regularly and when the appropriate time came for them to be weaned, we’d take the kittens and offer them to anyone on the staff that wanted a kitten. We were able to give them all away except for her last litter. We had a hard time finding someone who wanted them and at that point decided to have her spayed.
One thing that I found interesting was that each time we’d give away the kittens she’d walk around the facility meowing in what I interpreted a pleading manner. It wasn’t her “Give me food” or “give me attention” meow. It said to me that she had feelings, which shouldn’t have surprised me, but did.
She lived several more years and died of natural causes. We found her one morning just outside the door that we used to enter the offices. It was like she’d known she was in trouble and came looking for us to help her.
