Details

Everyone has seen a movie that has had an effect on us. Vanilla Sky is one of them for me. David Aames is in the elevator with the tech support person and they’re discussing David’s life. During that scene Tom Cruise says, “Ah, the little things. There’s nothing bigger is there?”. He’s referring to the details of his life.

Many people think that details are just that – details, little things – and something that can be ignored, overlooked or done poorly. But details aren’t just “details.” They are like the individual bricks in a brick wall. You can build a brick wall and leave out a few bricks and it will do the job of a wall…for a while. Imagine if the pyramids had been built with some of the stones a little larger than others. Details are like the foundation of a building. They must be in their proper place before something of substance can be built upon them.

We are building a corporation to be #1 in Quality and #1 in Customer Service. In order to be #1 you have to be the best, and in order to be the best you have to have the details in place.

The great chefs are great because they have great ideas about food tastes and textures. But do you think they throw everything in a pot and cook it or do they carefully measure everything and carefully tend to the details? Of course they go to great lengths and tend to every detail.
